ROH rumours up to 2021
Posted by dehggial
Fantastic ROH news:
During this extended period there will be 2 (yes, two) new Handel productions! The very brand new one by Kosky! The other one – new to ROH – you know and love by Loy (not that one, the other one). Scroll down 😉
Tl;dr: this is turning into a really excting period at ROH and not just because of Handel (but especially). I am also expecting Poppea cca Januray 2020, after the first two Monteverdi instalments. Very low on Mozart, though. You know there is more to him than the DaPonte stuff (and Mitridate).
It’s that time of the year people are eager to find out what’s coming up, so here are some updates from the ever reliable source. I put a NEW next to the information that’s transpired since my last post on the subject:

[edit: debuting in Munich this Summer with Coote in the title role and Fagioli and Davies as Nerone and Ottone]
edit 4 April 2019, due to the high traffic this post is getting:
Ariodante (Händel) -> instead of the above? I don’t know if I should complain; it’s Ariodante, after all, and with JDD. Why can’t we have both? Handel wrote most of his work in London. We should be swimming in Handel every other season.
Ariodante: JDD
NEW REVIVALS
Elektra (Strauss) 2020
Klytemnestra: Karita Mattila I’ll go see her!
Parsifal (Wagner) 2020
Conductor: Semyon Bychkov
Madama Butterfly (Puccini) Summer 2020
Conductor: Antonio Pappano
Goro: Carlo Bosi
NEW 2020 – 2021
Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Offenbach) Fall 2020
Production: Michieletto
Hoffmann: Juan Diego Florez
So they’re chucking out their ancient Hoffmann? Good riddance! I hope Michieletto does something with this sexist story. On the other hand, there’s a lot of Hoffmann in just a few years, chap wrote other fun stuff (like his take of Orphee).
Hänsel und Gretel (Humperdinck)
Production: Antony McDonald I wonder if it’s replacing the cancelled Konigskinder?
4 new works inspired by Slavoj Zizek’s writings (Saariaho, Turnage, Francesconi, Widmann) heh, interesting idea
Librettist: Sofi Oksanen
Alcina (Händel) ❤ ❤ ❤
Production: Christof Loy (from Zurich)
Bradamante: Varduhi Abrahamyan ❤
I’m expecting everyone to London for an extended Alcina party!
Věc Makropulos (Janacek) ❤ Mattila, right? She sang it at Southbank a couple of years back ❤

AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!
exactly 😉
yes to all the Mattila, and yes to all the Handel and that class trip.
Kleiter Contessa: oooh yes.
Damrau Marguerite might turn out to be spot-on casting.
…the Forza is the Munich one? No, the Munich one wasn’t Loy, was it? (I wonder whether at this point, Harteros is referencing Jonas K. as ‘work hubby’, with how they get couple-booked these days…)
No, the Munich one is Kusej. But the thing is she’s not here for it! Your mind is supplying the good/right thoughts. ROH darling gets all the Verdi these days.
Kleiter is good, then? I don’t know her.
that was Kusej? Hm, subpar for him…
Kleiter first showed up in the 2006 Salzburgs, I think? She was in some of them, of the more unknown ones (perhaps that Betulia?) – quite a Pamine trajectory since then.
yes, pretty poor. Then again, pretty poor opera 😉
ok, that might not be why I don’t know her, I haven’t seen the misc Mozart.
I think I more or less watched them all back then – she might have been in the Betulia liberata with Mijanovic?
oh, now that’s a way to introduce early Mozart 😀 you have not heard me moon over Mijanovic near enough to illustrate the true level of eyelash batting 😉
I traveled after her Cesare and her Ottone (ha!) back in the day and her Ottone was dreamy. Very, very dreamy.
sigh…
darlings = Jahooo?
Netrebko.
oh, Gospodina Viennanova.
haha!
am holding my breath for casting of Ruggiero.. i’d love to hear C.Rice !!
and am getting a little confused.. but how about:
C.Rice = Ruggiero, Alcina = A.Coote! now we just need to find the right balance with .. ok am getting very confused now.. about who would go off the island with whom.. with Abrahamyan and Morgana now in the mix..
everybody could be invited to the party, just keep the sisters PG-13 😉
At this point I think we should be lucky we have VA. But perhaps…
I CAN’T WITH COUNTERTENORS ANY MORE. I’m worried that Ruggiero will be given to one of them. Also very curious about the pants role in Hoffmann. I wonder why Sarah C never sung Nicklausse… It must have been offered to her (whereas Carmen I’m inclined to think probably hasn’t). Does Michieletto have favourite mezzos?
as it’s the Zurich Alcina I’m thinking of Jaroussky but who knows. The last time (last year) Nicklausse was Lindsey but since this is a new production perhaps not? I haven’t seen a lot of Michieletto (actually only 2) stuff so I have no clue. But as long as he makes Hoffmann more bearable I can put up with a lot.
See, I knew it. Porca miseria…
omg, just a quick note from the bus: March 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17 of 2019, Alice Coote is singing Ariodante in Chicago (with Bicket, Brenda Rae). very much dislike that Prina or a mezzo/contralto not casted for Polinesso, but i so happy.. must clear plan to hear A.Coote!!
it’s kind of interesting that they keep Polinesso a CT seeing as how it’s lower, more solid role. That being said, compare the amount of arias each has to sing…
Polinesso was written for a contralto not a castrato, so actually no reason at all to cast a CT!
Yaaay about Alcina!!!
as it seems Bradamante is kept a contralto/low mezzo, so should Polinesso, as both were Negri roles.
Oh, right, I guess acknowledging the original singer the role was written for does make a lot of sense in casting decisions (while of course it should not exclude casting singers with different types of voices)
it’s not easy to make a final call, since so much of the attraction to singing is subjective. On the other hand, if the role was written for a female contralto and we still have female contraltos, the role will be more likely to fit someone in that voice range. Whilst with castrati…
Reeeealllly? Hmmmm.
looks like the Aix production!
I think LOC was to be the last on a fairly long co-production list?
aha, well, they are making the right moves 🙂
yeah it travelled to Toronto last year
well, if this is not going to be a kitten of a Polinesso I don’t know who will 😀 looking forward to your (both of your?) reports of how he will do in Prina’s shoes (again!).
I would be curious to see what Iestyn Davies can muster in the way of Polinessitude, but I’d be hopping the night train for Coote and Brenda Rae.
I wish Brenda Rae was Armida in the recent Rinaldo concert performance instead of Archibald!
I wish Seattle Opera would put all of her Semele online instead of just 1 – 2 minute segments 🙂 (and then put the Young Artist performance up as well)
Archibald was a great Zerbineta the onlt time i heard her live
really? She was all right but I liked Laura Claycomb a lot better.
jeah, i thought she was fantastic! and singing opposite of A.Coote’s Komponist too, in Toronto
maybe you just hear her better then me 😉
i think it’s the role? You didnt hear her as Zerbineta did you?
yes, I did! Twice! (one year apart, too).
oh! well, i havent seen enough Zerbinetta then! 😀 . In fact that was also during my opera infancy days..
dont let this slip, let us contemplate plans at a soonish date 😉
haha, did you notice the Chen Reiss post/interview in the “more on WordPress.com”? are you guys hoping to see Davies as Polinesso?! Guy can’t hurt a fly (although he sings David).
jeah, we can get organized ;-), now i need to find a friend in Chicago…
