Thursday’s Something Else (Gomes)

tseI’m jumping all the way to Brasil this week with Gomes’s Il Guarany. I listened to it for its novelty factor and I found it pleasant enough; belcanto-Verdi-like from 1870, complete with ballet, a bit of complicated coloratura very nicely delivered by a young Stoyanova and some Verdian singing for the manly men. Les Indes Galantes is still being done and this one’s about as un-PC although Rameau was the better composer. Still, you could do much worse than Il Guarany on a rainy afternoon.
