Thursday’s Something Else (Janáček)

tseMy Czech opera mini journey continues with Janáček’s Věc Makropulos. Eternal life – a fascinating story, although the conclusion is a bit meh. Would the certitude of eternity dull one’s senses? Who can really tell? I’d try the potion.

The orchestral music is vivid and inventive but the singing is an extended recitative. I like a bit or recit, 100min is a tough call. Yet Janáček never lets things overstay their welcome and I’m lured in again and again. Curious opera.
