Thursday’s Something Else (Poulenc)

tseLo, a TSE on an actual Thursday! This morning I woke up earlier than usual so I had a bit of time to squeeze something in before work. That would be Poulenc’s Les dialogues des Carmelites. However, I didn’t have over two hours at my disposal, so I’ll have to get back to this some other time. The important thing is that I liked what I heard so far. The music makes perfect sense (it evokes the creepy atmosphere very well) and is not ugly by any means. The libretto seems very good as well and I liked the performances. There’s also another production I’ll be watching when I’m done with this one1.

  1. I chose this video because it had subtitles in English and I needed to know what the hell was going on on a first watch.

  1. It’s a good production. I saw it twice in Toronto (different cast). The La Scala DVD is good too. It’s a weird but satisfying piece. The final scene is devastating seen live in the house.
