Thursday’s Something Else on Tuesday (Mascagni)

tseSomething short and sweet again: Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana. Classic vendetta plot, with low tessitura female roles, but what a tearjerker, eh? I can see why it’s well loved and I’m sure I myself will make time for it again in the future. Zeffirelli’s very classical style cinematography fits the stereotypical plot; well sung by all. I wonder how this would work done contemporary style or out of its setting. Sicilians aren’t the only jealous & vengeful people in the world. Russians, for instance, give them a good run for their money. In fact, as far as stereotypes go, Sicilians and Russians seem to have a lot in common.
