Good mezzos for upcoming months
good mezzo #1. Tickets for legendary mezzo Brigitte Fassbaender’s March Masterclass at Wigmore Hall were £7 so I thought what the hell! and bought one for each of the two days. I’ve never attended a Masterclass before but I enjoy them regularly on youtube so I figure it’ll be fun.
good mezzo #2. The Barbican, that cold, ugly architectural spawn of the ’70s, is hosting this Handel concert performance:
8 February 6:30pm Theodora, Handel
Harry Bicket conductor | The English Concert
Rosemary Joshua soprano
Sarah Connolly mezzo-soprano
Tim Mead counter-tenor
Kurt Streit tenor
Neal Davies bass
Choir of Trinity Church Wall Street
If Sarah Connolly’s in it, I’m in. Joke aside, I like Rosemary Joshua too. Of the men I know Kurt Streit is not an ideal Idomeneo but his light tenor might be better suited for Baroque. Tthis was Handel’s favourite oratorio among his own, written late in the game (1740) and boasting several lofty choirs; their feel goes really well with Quo Vadis, which is one of the books I’m currently reading. I guess I’m in an unusually metaphysical frame of mind.
